  • Milk   16 years 14 weeks ago

You can test raw grass fed milk, as well...it's hard for many people to get but if you can, you can certainly use it as one of your dairy testing foods. Anytime dairy is in the menus in the future, you can have raw grass fed milk if you don't react to it.

  • rice   16 years 14 weeks ago

If you know you can't eat rice and quinoa, you can subsitute millet, wild rice, teff and amaranth. Buckwheat should also be ok. Consider avoiding them for a time and testing like the other sensitivities if you think there's a chance you could be sensitive to them, too.

It could be the apples? Or maybe it just does not work for your body- there does not have to be a reason why...
Go back to the vinegar you were eating before if you feel fine eating that one...

  • Question about children eating the recommended foods   16 years 14 weeks ago

I see no problem with children on this program- it is very nutritionally sound. I don't think it would cause weight loss in a child of normal weight, but keep an eye on her and she can eat more of the healthful carbs if you don't think she is eating enough and/or if she is very physically active.

  • I am gaining weight   16 years 14 weeks ago

Let's see...how much have you gained?
Increasing your exercise would be my first suggestion.
Also look at your portion sizes, particularly of carb foods. You may need to reduce these further.
Cut out any food you eat a lot/feel that you can't live without. Consider these possible sensitivities and test them after a few weeks (in the meantime see if you lose a few pounds).
These are my preliminary suggestions. Soon we will have the coaching program in place and you will be able to get more individualized help.

  • Thickening sauces?   16 years 14 weeks ago

At the time I wrote last night, it had been in the crockpot about 6 hours, on low.

It might not have been ask thick as normal because I had to omit the tomatoes, since I'm sensitive to nightshades. To add a little more bulk, I put in an extra carrot, a couple celery stalks, and added ground turkey for a bit more protein.

I ended up adding a little bit of arrowroot powder, and that helped a lot.

When I tasted the final product, it was edible, and even my daughter ate it, but it definitely would not be a favorite of ours. It was very bland at first, so I added some salt (about 1 1/2 tsp), some onion powder (about 1 tsp), and garlic powder (about 1 tsp). Then it was fairly good, but again, not something I'd probably go out of my way to eat.

Because I had to omit the tomatoes, which would add some sweetness, I think that I will probably add just a little bit of honey to it when I reheat it for another meal.

How long has it been in the crockpot so far?

But you have it right, I think-watch the TYPE of treats :)

  • Do you miss sugar?   16 years 14 weeks ago

    Dawn,

Yes, my will-power was at its peak when I received those truffles. But then on the two days of Christmas, I gave myself permission to have sugar. Since my husband hadn't eaten them all yet, I ended up trying one of those truffles.

The main thing I'll have to watch when I have this under control again is the type of treats I eat. White flour is my enemy. :?

  • Do you miss sugar?   16 years 14 weeks ago

Your reply has been here for a month, Dr. Winnie, and I didn't see it. I think eventually I'll have the kind of relationship with sugar that you have. The first time I eliminated it, I told myself "never again".

That's too hard to live with, and probably why I went overboard with sugar on my vacation.

This time, while I feel the need to eliminate it completely for a while, I believe I'll be able to handle having the rare treat. Especially if I make something homemade with organic brown sugar. (Or enjoy the occasional Cocoa-Cassava bar. Those are delicious.)

Also, I'm curious. Is there anything wrong with homemade ice cream? If I use raw, grass-fed cream, local farm eggs, and sweeten with stevia?

  • Do you miss sugar?   16 years 14 weeks ago

I appreciate both of your thoughts on sugar. I do not crave sugary things and really don't like things like donuts and cakes. I usually use dried fruit to sweeten things, or my favorites-sorghum syrup or honey. I really related to your thoughts, Dr. Abramson, in that you do not crave it anymore, but still enjoy it from time to time. I love to make occasional "treats" for my family, and it is good to hear you say that this is OK, when things are under control.

Speaking of control . . . I admire the place you got to with the box of truffles, TinaH. One thing I DO really enjoy is Belgium Truffles. I think I would have had to ration that out or something!

  • Detoxification program   16 years 14 weeks ago

I am just in Week 1. I have extremely high estrogen. Will this detox program help to clear estrogen out of my system? What do you recommend for someone who needs to detox heavy metals, balance hormones, and has extreme adrenal fatigue?

  • Vinegar reaction   16 years 14 weeks ago

Yes, it is organic, raw ACV, and I did react to it again. What would make me sensitive to it? I usually use my own homemade lacto-fermented vinegar, and have not noticed any reaction to it. Do you know why I would react to one and not the other?

    Thank you!

  • Vinegar reaction   16 years 14 weeks ago

Are you using an organic and raw apple cider vinegar? Why don't you test it by trying 1-2 tsp in a cup of warm water to make sure that's what is causing your reaction. If you react again after trying this, I would recommend avoiding it for a while as you are clearly sensitive to it.

  • Detoxification program   16 years 14 weeks ago

Where are you in the program? All the detoxification information is in the lessons for weeks 15-16, I believe...

  • Salt   16 years 14 weeks ago

    Antoinette,
Good quality salt such as celtic sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt contains minerals and is essential for healthy digestion and optimal adrenal function. We do not limit salt on this program for these reasons, but of course we do recommend cutting out common table salt completely as it is processed and demineralized.
    Hope this answers your question,

  • Shopping List Discrepancy   16 years 14 weeks ago

I noticed a few discrepancies with the shopping list and thought I'd mention it here in case it helps someone else out!

    WEEK 1
Missing from Shopping List but called for in Recipes or Meals:

Carrots (Middle Eastern Chickpea Stew, Meal 1&2-Day3 & Day 5, Meal 5&6-Day 5, Turkey or Beef Hash, and Asian Chicken Stir Fry) = approx. 16 carrots

    Papaya-Day 5, meal 5 & 6 = 1

    Pears-List calls for only 2.
    2 are needed in Green Salad w/pears and pecans, and 1 for Meal 1, Day 2 & 3 = 3

    Brussels Sprouts or Artichokes-called for on Day 7-Meal 5 & 6

Sardines-cannot find where they are used in any of the menus. Several cans called for on list.

Questions on some of the recipes:

    1) Crockpot Chicken- Are the sweet potatoes peeled and cubed, whole and unpeeled, or what, while they are being cooked in the crock pot?

Also, are these the sweet potatoes we use in later meals? Cold, reheated, mashed??? AND, are they greasy from being cooked under the crockpot chicken? I just can't quite wrap my mind around that. Can we just cook the chicken in the crock pot and bake the sweet potatoes separate???

    Thanks for your help!

  • Portions?   16 years 15 weeks ago

I am finding the portion and serving sizes to be ambiguous and confusing, and I know you are working on this, but I really want to succeed at this plan and so I am wondering if you can give some idea of how many people each meal is supposed to feed, how many servings from each recipe, and what portions are acceptable. For instance, Turkey, Tomato, and Avocado wraps: You are basically making 6 wraps from this recipe, but it says to reserve 1/2 for meal 2. So does this mean 3 per meal is a serving? What makes this further confusing is that in the intro it says that many of the recipes have you making food for several meals (Is this one of them?) and also in looking at the entire day's menus, I will have my 4 cups of veggies in by meal 3, or did I read this wrong?? I also realize that veggies are pretty open in quantity right now, but it would be soooo helpful to know how much to buy, how much to save back, how many people this will feed, etc.

    Thanks for your help!

  • Green Salad with pecan and pear   16 years 15 weeks ago

    Karen,
I really wish I had way to solve this for you, but I am not sure I do, esp. not at this time. I would use the shopping list for reference and follow it for you, but I would not double everything esp. if certain items are expensive...I think you will have to use your intuition for the time being to buy enough food, but I do not want to see you spending far above your budget- that will create unwanted stress.
Remember that the goal is to have enough food on hand at all times so that you can always have something healthy and delicious to eat when you are hungry. We make the serving sizes larger to allow for small mini meals and leftovers so you don't always have to cook a meal, but if yoiur family is larger and you are not coming up with leftovers for a recipe that says 6-8 servings you are obviously going to have to adjust. But certainly don't adjust by buying more specialty items- just substitute with more basic items that are less expensive but still nutritious. I hope this helps,

  • Green Salad with pecan and pear   16 years 15 weeks ago

    Dr. Winnie Abramson,

I am asking these questions so I can figure out how much to buy for my family. For instance I know if a recipie calls for 6 servings then if my whole family is eating that meal and I want leftovers then I would probably need to double the recipie for future meals. I think I personally am doing fine on portions it's more to make up a grocery list for shopping. It's really hard to tell how much to buy without this information. Last week I spent around $250 for groceries and so far I did pretty well not buying too much, but this week the menu has alot of expensive items and I am anticipating an even higher grocery bill. So if I know a serving size, hopefully I can buy the right amount and not waste any.

The antipasto plate is for dinner one night, but I have NOOO idea what to expect for a typical serving size, so do I double for a family and if I do, then 2 jars of artichokes and 2-4 jars roasted peppers...gets really expensive for just one meal.

The grocery lists don't help me as I need to adjust for everyone in my family and it takes alot of time to try to figure out. So when I am asking for serving sizes, I am really hoping to get a good idea of how much to buy.

All this being said, can you tell me how many servings the antipasto plate makes and what do you expect a serving of the turkey wraps are? Do I assume 6-8 servings for each recipie?

Thank you so much for all your help, I am really liking the change. My sugar cravings are almost nill and that is really a blessing. Now if I could only get a handle on this shopping thing.......
