Natural Treatment for Depression and Emotional Eating

Natural treatments for depressionNatural Treatment for Depression Can Change  Your Life

Q: Dear Dr. P, this is a mental health question. Nothing is going right in my life. I hate where I live, the weather is cold and bleak, my boyfriend dumped me, I have no job. I binge on junk food to feel better. My doctor prescribed me Prozac. What else is there that can help me with this total depression and despair? I feel like I have no reason to live. ---April L.

A: Dear April, I will help you best I can but please see a qualified health professional as this is a very serious depression and a Q&A column does not do your issues justice.

The problem with SSRI antidepressants like Prozac is that they attempt to recycle serotonin which is a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good. However, if you are deficient in serotonin, it makes more sense to take amino acids for 1-3 months that will permanently boost your levels of serotonin.

Recycling the low levels that you have which will make you forever dependent on the drug because it is not treating the cause which is a deficiency of serotonin.

Also, Prozac contains fluoride which makes you like a numb zombie. I think feeling your feelings is important to work through them.  What your resist persists, what you look at and work through, disappears.

They also cause many side-effects, some can be severe such as psychosis, suicide or a deeper depression.  In my opinion, it is better to supplement with something like 5-HTP which will increase your serotonin levels naturally without side-effects.

Please don't despair about how you feel. You have a lot of stress; it's normal to feel negative feelings when under high stress. You are not alone, many people are going through rough times right now.

Natural Treatment for Depression

1. On the Physical level, there are natural supplements you can take to balance your brain chemistry (5-HTP, DLPA, St. John's Wort) and make sure you are taking a high potency whole food multi and probiotics for basic health.

Lifestyle is also key. Exercise daily, get out in nature daily and eat a healthy, organic diet with whole foods. Getting outside daily also makes sure you spend adequate time in the sun, which is important for your health and mood. You may also benefit from The Ultimate Recovery E-Cookbook, which helps people overcome addictions.

2. On the Mental level, I recommend the book Ask and It Is Given or Money, and the Law of Attraction: Learning to Attract Wealth, Health, and Happiness. It talks about the Law of Attraction and how we are creators of our reality.

The essential message of the book is that in order to achieve what you want, you must be able to feel good and in a positive enthusiastic state of mind you should think about what you want to attract and get excited about having what you want. I know you may think this is impossible given your current state of being but no matter how bad you think your life is, there are others who have it far worse than you do.

Keep in mind that most spiritual and personal growth takes place during periods of intense suffering because that is when we are most motivated to search for answers and raise our consciousness in order to find relief from the suffering. Think of this time as a gift for you to look at what you've created with your life and decide to think, speak and do things differently. Reinvent yourself and create a new reality.

Act as if it's on its way to you and trust that it is. I also think taking action is important to manifest your desires. Just remember that the more you focus on what you want or don't want, the more it will come to you so it's important to monitor your thoughts and speech and actions to make sure they are in accordance with what you want.

It helps to create a positive feeling state by taking note of what you're grateful for as often as possible. Also please reach out to friends and family during this time so you can get lots of love and support.

3. On the Spiritual level, I recommend Eckhart Tolle's book A New Earth. It talks about how our egoic mind is always thinking thoughts that are negative and counter to inner peace (being present without thoughts). It's important to meditate and do other exercises that help with inner peace.

Please know that your sadness and despair is only temporary and that with the right books, mindset and nutritional plan, you will pull out of your depression, begin to feel good again and attract what you want in your life. Keep in touch and if you would like a phone consult, let me know.

Lastly, I think the infoproduct Emotional Eating: Overcoming Food Addiction with EFT and Amino Acids is perfect for helping you overcome the binging and the low moods and gives you the dosages of amino acids to take depending on your symptoms.

With love,
Dr. Kendra Pearsall
