Seasonal adaptions?

When my family reviewed our first week with this program, we had unanimous feedback that the food choices and menus seemed more for a summer season, than winter.

We are feeling like we are freezing!

Where I live it is snowy and cold. In the winter months, we typically have soups and stews available at all times to warm and nourish our bodies. We still eat salads, raw veggies, and make our own sprouts regularly, but our normal winter menus center around either a hearty soup or stew.

I am assuming that as long as we are following the allergy guidelines, we can adapt and do our own thing. Feedback please.

Also, from a shopper's perspective, many of the ingredients are off season and therefore priced much higher than when they are in season, as well as shipped in from all over.

We (my family) follow a local, organic, and in season food plan normally. Not knowing the nutritional or metabolic reasons behind most of the foods in the Enlita menus, I am not sure if I would be totally messing up to substitute local, in season produce for items listed in the Enlita plan.

Obviously, I need to do some tweaking if I am going to have my family's continued support on this. Can you help me with this, please?

I agree with you, Mamacabbage, on just staying within the parameters of the program and subbing in other foods or meals. We have been doing just the same thing as your family-protein with a steamed veggie, salad or fruit. In doing this, I have also tailored the menu to better suit our geographic area and seasonal food availability, which pleases my family immensely. So I appreciate your feedback and suggestions!

I hope to see Enlita figure out some way of doing this within their wonderful menus, however. Perhaps this discussion will help facilitate that addition!

Smiles,
Dawn

Seasonal adaptions?

I have found that some of the recipes are great for this time of year. We live on the WA coast, so it's not terribly cold here most of the time, though we've had hard freezes the last couple days. Smoothies have been fine for us for breakfast, since we tend to eat lighter in the morning anyway.

I found the crockpot chicken bean stew, the middle eastern chickpea stew, and the lamb lentil stew to be great for this cold weather, as well as the basic crockpot chicken. Also, diverging from the menus and having very simple steak, chicken breast, or chicken thigh baked or broiled along with some steamed vegetables has been a quick, easy, warming meal.

seasonal problems

Dawn,
I agree with you- this is a problem, but I am not sure how to fix it!
Members are starting at all points of the year, but many of the recipes were initially written in the summer months, and the menus reflect this....also keep in mind that our members live all over the world, where food availability and prices vary greatly throughout the year. I too live where it is now very cold right now and the thought of ex. drinking smoothies is the furthest thing from my mind at this point...For the time being, assume you can definitely adapt any recipe to fit your needs in terms of subsituting local and seasonal foods. Just stick to the other parameters of the program and you should be fine.
